All electrical products have magnetism, such as mobile phones, televisions, tape recorders, computers, and so on. Therefore, watches are easily magnetized beyond protection. How do you test whether your watch is magnetized? The simplest method is to use a relatively sensitive compass, lay the compass flat on the table, and then hold the watch close to the top of the compass, doing a quick back and forth movement. If the pointer of the compass swings, it indicates that the watch has magnetism.
Once the watch is magnetized, it will affect the timing accuracy of the watch, resulting in significant errors, making it possible for the watch to move fast or slow. The most serious problem is the adhesion between the hairspring ring and the ring. In that case, the watch will gain more than 2 hours almost every day. In addition, like the automatic bearing part, the magnetic field will absorb more iron filings and debris, which will increase the wear of the ball bearing and affect the efficiency of automatic winding.
A quartz watch is better, as it will at most stop running under the action of a strong external magnetic field, but there will be no impact of magnetized parts on the watch's running time in the future. Once removed from the magnetic field, the watch can immediately return to normal. However, in strong AC magnetic fields (such as around large electric motors or transformers), quartz watches can travel very fast, so be careful when wearing them.
The strength of the external magnetic field is related to the magnetic strength of the object in contact with the magnetic field and the contact distance. The greater the magnetism, the closer the contact distance, and the more serious the magnetization of the watch. If it is an AC magnetic field, the watch is alternately magnetized and demagnetized, so the effect on the watch is still a DC magnetic field.
